Waseigestunned by Standard sacking | World Soccer

Standard Liege have fired former Belgium coach Robert Waseige after just five games in charge.

The 63-year-old toook over at the start of the season but Standard did not record a win during Waseige’s brief spell in charge.

‘Following several meetings which took place on Sunday, the management of Standard Liege took the decision to stop its sport relations with coach Robert Waseige,’ the club said in a statement on its website.

Liege lost 2-1 at home to Club Bruges on Friday, their fourth defeat infive league games this season. They currently lie bottom of the standings with one point.

Standard Liege director Alphonse Costantin said the club had thought long and hard about their decision to sack Waseige.

‘We didn’t want to take a quick decision blaming one single man,’ he said.

‘For several weeks, the board has been worried about the negative results of the team,’ he added.

Costantin confirmed that the board issued Waseige with an ultimatum on Friday: win against Club Bruges or be fired.

Waseige was stunned by the news, accusing the club of acting in haste.

“I don’t understand the Board’s decision”, the former Belgium manager told Agence Belga.

“It’s too hasty to sack me. I knew there were problems with this team and I was busy sorting them out” he explained.

“It would have been wiser for the Board to let me work a little longer. But, hey, that’s the name of the game”.
